The principle of reminiscence therapy is to assist people who have dementia to interact and converse in a natural way by stimulating their long-term memory with material from the past.
In order to assist, the BBC has put together a collection of images, audio and video arranged either by theme or decade to stimulate the long-term memory of those with dementia and help them interact with others by encouraging them to talk about their past.
Please note that the photos, audio and video clips are more about stimulating memories and conversation with those with dementia rather than being intended for general interest.
To begin, simply select a Theme (such as Sport, Events etc.) or a Decade (1930s, 1940s etc.) and choose whether you wish to have Image, Audio or Video content. The results are randomised each visit, however items can be ‘favourited’ to return to later.
For more information and tips on running successful reminiscence sessions, the BBC has put together some guidance which can be downloaded here (pdf).
